China NightMy Grandfather, who turned 90 last year, was a marine who fought in Guadalcanal and Korea. One of the things he brought back from Korea was a copy of this very 78 that's playing in this video here--it's called China Night, and despite its title is actually a Japanese record:
My Grandfather had one of those 1950's console stereo systems that was built into a huge, freestanding cabinet/table/piece of furniture that's about seven feet long and weighs 150 pounds. You'd open the lid of the polished wooden top and there would be the turntable underneath--pretty snappy. He played me this record once and I thought it was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever heard, despite having no idea what the lyrics were about. I'm looking for my own copy now.
There's more information about China night, including an mp3 download, on this blog here:

Recent obsessionsI realize I don't post here very much any more, as Monolators is in a little bit of hibernation at the moment. We're not done, though--far from it. Just taking a little rest so that Cobra Lilies can get some attention.
I think this is sad. I am going to buck the trend of abandoning one's blog that seems to be so trendy with the kidz these days. In lieu of Monolators news I am going to share some things that have caught my attention lately.
